CREATING CIRCLES OF SUPPORT

Babson College professors Drs. Rob Cross and Danna Greenberg, along with former Harvard Business Review editor Karen Dillon, assert that “Resilience is not purely an individual characteristic, but it is enabled by strong relationships and networks.” In their 2021 article “The Secret to Building Resilience,” the authors report early findings of their research that points to how we can become more resilient in the process of connecting with others in our most challenging times.

In working with women over the years at Simmons University, we have found that women specifically need to be very intentional about building a support system. We often do this more thoughtfully or organically in our personal lives but not in our professional lives. Women can and do build support systems through connection with other women, and through contextually supportive nonwork arenas like our communities of faith or children’s school communities or our own family communities. We have support in our lives.

You must lean on wise elders and wise others. You need connectors, you need mavens, the collectors of information; you need mentors, sponsors and coaches. You need mentees (those wise youngers will teach you a lot!). Candidly, helping women to rely more on others could be an entire book in and of itself. The importance here is how seriously you need to take the intentional cultivation of support from others. As always, we are big proponents of inquiry that easily deepens each of the 7 Practices. As such, ask yourself:

• Who do I need on my personal board of directors?

• From whom can I source best practices?

• Who are those people who have gone through what I’m going through? Who can give me perspective?

• Who do I need to know geographically or locally?

• What resources do I need? How can I get help?

• How do I need to adapt to receive the help I need?
